40 of Japan’s Top Game Composers Form Mega Alliance: Video Game Sound Creator’s Alliance

Big news from Japan. It seems as though the majority of freelance game music composers from Japan have teamed up to form the Video Game Sound Creator’s Alliance. As to what that is exactly, I have no idea, but their membership list is quite impressive, including composers such as Hiroki Kikuta [2], Akari Kaida [3], Takenobu Mitsuyoshi [4], Yasunori Mitsuda [5], Michiru Yamane, and about 30 others. The group was founded by Yuji Takenouchi, and our good friend hally [6] is actually listed as the group’s executive adviser.

Pretty awesome, but let’s see what they end up doing. It sounds like the GANG of Japan if you ask me. Wonder if we’re going to see Nobuo Uematsu pop on this list any time soon! While the official site [7] is still under construction, I recommend heading over and checking it out. It’s set to launch on October 19, 2009.

We know those are obviously all talented people, the question is what does the group intend to work on, or what goals will be accomplished by the alliance?

It seems like the main goal of the alliance is simply networking and friendship among fellow composers. As Technouchi mentioned in his interview on SEMO, and as he wrote on the Geondan frontpage, rather than considering fellow composers in the game music business as “rivals,” or perhaps he means “enemies,” he’d rather have everybody be considered “friendly rivals,” where everyone can exchange information, tips, and help provide each other with further job opportunities. It definitely makes sense. I just hope it doesn’t create any “in-circle” “out-circle” relationship among composer do or don’t decide to join. The conditions for joining mentioned on the page are: you have to be involved in game sound creation, have at least one game published that you did the sound for (past or present), and it can’t be pachinko. Ha ha
