E3 2010: Kenji Yamamoto Skips Metroid For Donkey Kong Country

[1]

So, we’ve been posting [2] about the Metroid: Other M soundtrack and how Kuniaki Haishima is working on the title instead of Kenji Yamamoto. Everyone has been wondering what Kenji Yamamoto has been up to, until now!

In an E3 interview with IGN [3], Retro Studios mentioned that they were continuing their collaboration with Kenji Yamamoto on Donkey Kong Country Returns after their joint work on the Metroid Prime series. I was initially surprised that Retro Studios was handling the game, but even more so at this news. But I must say that I am even more excited about this game after hearing it.

Are you surprised by the news? Do you think Kenji Yamamoto will be up to the task or arranging themes from one of the most highly regarded soundtracks in the industry?

I’m very excited about this game and very excited to have Yamamoto doing more work. I love that he’s “in” with Retro Studios. What a great East-West combo!

I find it a shame that they couldn’t get Dave Wise to lend some assistance to the score; he’s left Rare, and–just as a personal aside–he’s probably my favourite video-game music composer. The Yamamoto-Retro alignment is an interesting one, nonetheless, though I do prefer Mr. Wise’s understanding and consequent realisation of video-game music.

Knowing Kenji there’s probably gonna be ALOT of guitar work… YES!!!

As much I love Yamamoto’s work on Metroid Prime, as much I also love David Wise’s compositions for the DK franchise so I don’t know if I should be happy or sad about this news.

Maybe David Wise will end up doing some work with Yamamoto? That would be super rad!

The song in this video sounds like Kenji to me. From beginning to end I love this song. And if it’s not Kenji, then I’d certainly like to know who this is!!!
