E3 2011: Nintendo Press Conference Opens With Live Orchestra

[1]

The biggest surprise of Nintendo’s E3 2011 press conference came right at the beginning as a live orchestral was lifted into the Nokia Theater playing a beautiful rendition of the main theme from The Legend of Zelda. Yes, they opened their press conference by paying tribute to the music of the franchise, and followed with some music-oriented announcements. I couldn’t help but feel that they were talking directly at me.

So, just what was performed and announced? In addition to performing the beautiful and mysterious main theme from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (due out this year) as well as a few comical jingles from the series, it was announced that two CD releases from the franchise are in the works.

And no, it’s not the Twilight Princess soundtrack.  Find out what was announced after the jump!

The first of two CDs mentioned was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D soundtrack, which will be distributed to the first round of fans who register their Ocarina of Time 3D game on the Club Nintendo website. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a single CD, and won’t feature all of the music from the game, but we’ll have to wait and see. They’re sure to include the newly orchestrated track by Mahito Yokota, and I can’t wait to hear it.

The second CD goes along with an even bigger announcement, which is a worldwide orchestral music concert tour featuring the music of The Legend of Zelda to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The tour will hit North America, Europe, and Asia this year. Even more, the concert tour is being produced by JMP Productions, who you probably know as the production company behind PLAY! A Video Game Symphony. The second CD release will be related to this concert tour (here’s hoping for a live recorded album for those who can’t make it to the shows), and the release will be tied to the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Whether that means it will be a pre-order bonus, limited edition bonus, or simply launching at the same time is unknown.

Still, I’m ecstatic to see Nintendo givin Zelda’s musical legacy its due respect, and can’t wait to hear more regarding these CDs. You can be we’ll let you know when we have more information.

We’ll have more coverage of Nintendo and the titles shown at the press conference and on the floor in the coming days. Stay tuned!

If they are only Club Nintendo releases, Nintendo still doesn’t understand the demand. I’m not thrilled at all about the upcoming soundtracks, mainly because I know that since I’m not a Club Nintendo member, or if I was, since I barely buy any Nintendo games these days, I’d probably not have enough to even get them. The idea is nice, but the manner of obtaining them is weak, in my opinion.

I hope the tour cd is of a better sound quality than the Play! album. That recording was full of audio mishaps… I want a cd to give the scores what they deserve! I’ll keep my fingers crossed :).

Agree with Don. Release the soundtrack to the masses, not just club members. That also means the possibility for Swedish Nintendo fans getting it is all the more slim… (Hello, hundreds of dollars going through eBay…)
