GDC 2009: Class Is In With Hitoshi Sakimoto and Norihiko Hibino

[1]

GDC is one of the best times of year for people like us. The industry-only event [2] is the premiere gathering of game audio professionals from around the world, and it looks as though the conference’s streak of bringing in speakers from abroad will continue this year with two guests from Japan.

Hitoshi Sakimoto will be discussing his 20 years [3] in the gaming industry, while Norihiko Hibino will be talking up his work [4] on the Metal Gear Solid series. I imagine both will be present at the Video Games Live show that will surely take place during the week of March 23-27, 2009, so even if you’re not an industry professional, you’re likely in for a treat!

Would you attend a VGL concert solely based on Sakimoto’s or Hibino’s appearance in the meet and greet line? Any ideas as to what Sakimoto may focus on while covering his lengthy career?

I really wish Hitoshi Sakimoto would talk about Basiscape more, it’s interesting to seee companies like Basiscape and OMF and I’d really love to know more about them.

Is there going to be a coverage on GDC?

We’re definitely going to try, man. CMP is making it hard this year, as they’re only inviting the top sites. We’ll see what happens!

You’re the first website I’ve found that really concentrates on game music and that has really interesting interviews or reviews. I hope it happens!

I really appreciate that. And I appreciate you commenting on our stories. It’s nice to know people are out there reading!

I’ve only found about OSV two weeks ago through Kotaku as I’m quite busy but this is a website I now check daily ( as opposed to kotaku! ) and I take my time to comment on anything interesting I read here. I must say I wish I’d done it first!

Has GDC been there for awhile? Are there any similar events on the continent?

So to hear those 2 lectures, you’d at least need the “conference pass” level of ticket, eh? Which is a thousand bucks…

@Carl: I think the audio pass should do it, Carl. At least, if they’re still doing an audio pass. The amateur audio pass used to be about $400 or so.

Anyway, I know both of them will be at the Video Games Live performance, so you can always hit them up there. We also have confirmation that we’ll be covering the event, so I’ll let you guys know what they say. Also will likely do some interviews as well.

@Pierre-Olivier: GDC has been going on for a long time, yeah. They’ve actually expanded it a bit, so that there’s GDC Canada, GDC France, GDC Austin, Texas, GDC China, and maybe even some others. But GDC San Francisco is the GDC, the core event.
