OSVchannel: Final Fantasy XIV Soundtrack Unpacking Video

We’ve got a special treat for you today. While the Final Fantasy XIV Battle Tracks and Field Tracks albums that Patrick posted about last month [1] will not be released until September 29, 2010 in Japan, we have them here for you now, and believe you’ll be surprised by what’s contained within. The two discs feature only a taste of what Nobuo Uematsu has created for the game, but Square Enix has certainly gone all out to make these “mini” soundtracks stand out on the store shelf. I don’t want to spoil too much, so feel free to take a peak at the above video to find out what to expect when these soundtracks hit you doorstep next week.

Oh, and I wanted to note the change in format. I loved Patrick’s table-top videos so much that I decided to go this route as well. Let me know if this works better than my poorly-lit office, and if the trade-off of not having music in the background is worth the better view.

We’ll have a review of both discs in the coming days, so keep checking back, and be sure to let us know what you think of Square Enix’s radical approach to the packaging for these Final Fantasy XIV soundtrack discs.

Nice! Thoughts:

1) Unique packaging is a mixed blessing. I like having something different, but putting it on shelves and such is a complicated affair. I was sort of hoping those fold-outs could become some sort of poster or image stand (like the SaGa box with that big artwork thingy). But it looks like you ultimately need them to re-package the discs.

2) Speaking of, cloth sleeves are the best. Just, totally awesome.

3) The metallic blue immediately reminded me of FF7 piano. Anyone else look at that and be like “oh snap!” ??

4) Question for readers: do you think the “full OST” is in wait because there’s more to be written? Or because Dog Ear will publish instead of S-E? And how many discs do you think it will be?

5) Jayson, If I ever visit you I’m stealing the Cactuar plushie. I know it will bring me bad luck but I just can’t help myself. That is too cool.

The packaging looks like something out of a grocery store 🙁

Oh my God, Cedille, that’s it! It looks like those cardboard packages they include for Hot Pockets so you can get them crispy in the microwave. Haha.

And Pat, they’re not really “cloth.” They’re like that weird papery/fabric material. And these don’t fit very nicely on your CD rack.

And yeah, everyone is talking about cactuar. Nobody noticed the moogle plushie on my left, as I guess I covered it up with my arm.

I think they are just waiting to release the full OST when the PS3 version comes out. As far as I know, all the music was completed at the end of October 2009.

Does the author knows when the official OST will be released? Desperately waiting for it 🙁

Hey Mike, we asked that very question here:

They said they’re “waiting for the right time.”
