PAX East 2010: Video Game Orchestra’s Vampire Killer

Well, PAX East 2010 is over. I wish I could have been there, as there were some awesome guests in attendance, including Metroid Metal and Shota’s own Video Game Orchestra. On the topic of the VGO, Shota passed along this YouTube clip of their “Vampire Killer” performance from Castlevania, and it’s not what you’d expect.

It definitely sounds more like a rock band take on the theme as opposed to an orchestra. My only complaint would be the terrible recording here in this video. Hopefully we can get a better recording from Shota himself when he has time (they’re playing Anime Boston next week, so he’s quite the busy man). I’d like to hear how the rest of the evening’s performances went with this rockin’ rendition of “Vampire Killer” in the mix.

What do you think of the performance? Would you like to hear more heavy metal music from the VGO?

Given what I’ve seen of VGO in the past year, I honestly think these guys are the next big thing for video games music performed live. A streamed concert, plenty of youtube videos…I’d like to believe an album is merely a case of when, not if.

That said, I’m *so* sick of Castlevania. Sorry, guys. I think I’ve heard Vampire Killer in just about every variation shy of what Weird Al might do to it, and this rocking rendition, while amped and good, is just a bit boring to me. It’s sort of like the Black Mages: a little too much keyboard to be ‘heavier’ metal, way too much electric guitar to be anything but a form of metal. Maybe I’m spoiled by Powerglove and Crow’s Claw…

Starts out with Bloody Tears before going to Vampire Killer, cool, almost making it “Den” from Dracula X. Has a nice beat to it in the background. Would have seen that if I weren’t doing other things at the time at PAX East.
