R.I.P. Gigastudio :(

[1]

Today, Tascam announced [2] that Gigastudio 4 will be the last version of Gigastudio we will be seeing. Sales and support will continue until the end of the year, but after that it’s all over. While the industry has mostly moved on to Kontakt [3], this is still (for me) a pretty significant event, as Gigastudio was one of the first pieces of professional software I bought. And in case it’s not palpable enough, they already moved it to the Legacy section [4] of their site. Aww

While most people are glad to see this outdated and poorly-supported software hit the bricks, there is still a grassroots following for Gigastudio, and a website [5] has been started that petitions Tascam to make GS opensource. Of course, we all know how much good online petitions do, but at least it shows that there is still some love for this program.

it’s kinda sad. I remember using the old versions of Gigastudio. I found my gigapiano CD the the other day and laughed heartily. I’m a Kontakt boy, all they way now.

Pretty crazy. Lots of composers are still even using Gigasampler.
