Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem was released five years ago on DVD. How is this news? Well, in the past year (since I personally discovered the thing) I have introduced hordes of anime fans and Daft Punk fans to this match made in heaven. So many people haven’t heard of this film that really deserve to know.

So here’s the setup: veteran anime creator/producer Leiji Matsumoto (Galaxy Express 999, Captain Harlock, Space Battleship Yamato) designs characters and a world under the direction of three French guys.

Who are these guys? Learn more after the jump along with a video.

These guys are not known for telling stories in the conventional sense, but their music is known worldwide as some of the best techno/dance/pop music to grace your sweet little ears. They are Daft Punk, and they put the entirety of their second album (Discovery) into film form. This is Interstella 5555.

If you’ve never seen it, and you’re a fan of Matsumoto and/or Daft Punk, this needs to be a part of your collection. The blue-skinned heroes from outer space will capture your imagination. If you have seen it, tell us what you think of it! Also, what potential East-meets-West tag-teams would make awesome anime films with “stellar” soundtracks?
