Ys III: Oath in Felghana is Back for the PSP With a JDK Band Bonus CD

[1]

Heads up Ys fans.  Ys III remake for Windows, The Oath in Felghana, is being ported to PSP in Japan on April 22, 2010 and first-print editions will include a bonus CD called Ys: The Oath in Felghana jdk Special.  Despite the nostalgic “jdk Special” title, a term that was formerly reserved for Sound Team jdk in-house arrangement albums and should bring back Soundboard II memories to old Falcom fans, this disc is set to include themes chosen and arranged by JDK Band.  The bonus CD is being included with the first pressings of both the regular edition and the limited edition, with the limited edition to include a Felghana drama CD as well.

In addition to this news, Falcom has announced that the PSP version of Felghana will (in Falcom remake tradition) feature an option to choose 3 different BGM types: Felghana original (Windows), PC-8801, and X68000.  Now you can play the game in two different styles of chip tunes!  Actually, the PC-8801 version and the X68000 version weren’t all that different, aside from the stronger drum sampling in the X68000 version, so it would’ve been nice to get something more interesting like the PC Engine Super CD version, but I suppose that’s asking too much.  Normally I would say, “Get over to Falcom’s page and reserve it right now!” but as of today, Falcom has yet to list it on their order page.  They are instead referring to Japanese electronic store, Sofmap [2], as SofMap is running a promotion to include two different Felghana telephone cards with the order.  Unfortunately SofMap doesn’t appear to ship internationally, so keep an eye on Falcom’s order page or seek it elsewhere.

Are you looking forward to playing Felghana on the PSP?  What’s your favorite version of Ys III’s soundtrack?

That’s quite a nice package they are putting together for the PSP re-release of Oath of Felghana. I like the fact that the game will be voiced given the recent trend of drama CDs Falcom has been putting out for the Sora no Kiseki series and now the Y’s series. Must be making good money for them.

I agree that it is a shame the PC-Engine music isn’t an option in the game. This went along with my disappointment that the Music Box in Felghana that came with the first press edition of the PC release also didn’t come with the PC-Engine tracks among the 8 CDs that came with it.

Thanks for additional info, Justin. Didn’t realize the exact details of the music featured in the PSP version!

I really wish the PC engine version was available somewhere. It’s the best version. Nothing in the 8 discs in the Oath of Felghana box even came close.

Oh, god, not more jdk arranges of the one of the best…wait…HECK YES! 🙂 This is incredibly good news. Then again, being a staunch advocate of the Jindo version of Oath in Felghana (and very aware that the only attempt to Superly Arrange that soundtrack so far didn’t do so well), I’m really curious what jdk Band intend to do. A full band arrangement of Strongest Foe would be bittersweet — I’m still hoping to hear SCIAS live…

Chris: I always liked the fact that Adol was traditionally reticent/unvoiced, and then for the anime/drama cds they cast one of the most famous seiyuu of the era, Kusao Takeshi, to handle his voice. Spikey-ish hair? Check. Naive but brave hero? Check. Sword? Check. Quick, call in Trunks/Parn!

Between him, the legendary Mitsuishi Kotono as Lilia and Tesho Genda as Dogi, the otherwise fairly lacklustre ‘Ys’ OVA gained an interesting edge of vocal quality.

I agree with Wes! Every time they release another Y’s soundtrack I think about how I already have a dozen of them but then I remember how awesome they all are!
