If you’re a fan of older science fiction/adventure films such as E.T. and The Goonies with a horror twist of Stephen King thrown in and you’re not yet watching Netflix’s series Stranger Things, then you probably should be. The show focuses on a early ’80s era “mad science in suburbia gone wrong” theme that really drives home the nostalgia. I’m only two episodes in and I’m hooked with the suspense and questions that float around the small town it’s centered in.
One of the great things about the series is it’s original music. Each episode is peppered with classic tunes from the ’70s and ’80s that you’d typically hear in that decade. However the show’s score, purported to be composed by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of the band S U R V I V E, drips of eerie synths and creepy vibes not unlike a John Carpenter score. The show’s opener alone has flavors of Halloween about it. Now, it sounds like those of us hooked on said music will be able to purchase it via soundtrack.

Great news for series fans and those of us who love a good ’80s horror cinema score. We’ll keep you posted on when a release date is announced and where to find the Stranger Things soundtrack when it goes live.
What do you think of Stranger Things’ soundtrack? Does it fall in line with other scores of the era it represents? What are your favorite scores that you think helped inspire it? Let us know!
Ulysses 31 was a cartoon before my time. It aired in 1981 and combined space adventure with Ancient Greek Myth in the 31st Century. Most importantly though, it had an incredible soundtrack composed by Haim Saban, Shuki Levy, Denny Crockett and Ike Egan. The latest edition of the soundtrack is an incredible accomplishment. The producers located all of the original recording masters and had them mastered at Abbey Road Studios, London. Even cooler is the album has it’s own trailer.
The series was a huge hit in France, and the album opens with the French theme song. However at 119 tracks spread across two CDs, all of the English songs have been included as well. If you’re a fan of 80’s cartoon music this is must own. You can read the full track details on the video game music database, or in French at the producer’s website.
You can order the album directly from Amazon France for 25 Euro plus shipping.

Lakeshore Records has finally confirmed the official release date of the soundtrack to the phenomenal USA Network TV series Mr. Robot. The shows music was composed by Mac Quayle and features a unique use of electronic sounds to bring the score to life. For me personally I consider it to be the best electronic score produced for television since Joseph Trapanese’s work on Tron: Uprising. Lakeshore Records revealed the CD album designs this morning which is a clear nod to classic Atari game boxes.
Lakeshore Records will release a two-volume soundtrack for the Golden Globe® and Peabody Award-winning USA Network series Mr. Robot, digitally on June 3, and on CD June 24. A special LP package will be released later this year. The albums feature original music by series EMMY®-nominated composer Mac Quayle (“The People v. O.J. Simpson”, “American Horror Story”, “Scream Queens”). The second season of MR. ROBOT premieres on USA Network Wednesday, July 13 at 10/9c.

“Lets Kick Shell!” is an officially licensed album by “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. The band is comprised of Long Island natives (Chris Wall, David Kaplan, Brandon Dove & Dan Gluszak) who came together to pay tribute to their favorite songs from the NYC sewers which otherwise were never commercially released. You can preview the 5 track album below.
I have listened to the album and it’s a perfect tribute to the 1987 cartoon series. The opening theme cover captures the essence of the original with the performers even replicating the the four ninja turtle’s dialogue clips. It’s a wonderful release and I think a welcome one for Ninja Turtle fans who have never seen an official release of any of the cartoon series or video game music in the past, it has Turtle Power. You can purchase a digital copy of the album on bandcamp now for $4.99. If you want to grab the LP release it is available for $10.87 at the Enjoy The Ride Records Web Store. And it looks like they are selling fast, at the time of writing this post both the Splinter and Shredder LPs were already sold out.

We have a “50th Anniversary” Star Trek collection that we’re going to do a little differently…because we’re TAKING REQUESTS! This 50th Anniversary album (# of discs TBD) will have music from across the 50 years of the Star Trek franchise—including previously unreleased cues from TNG, DS9, VOY (beyond the upcoming album) and ENT. This is not to say there may not be future volumes for DS9, ENT and the other shows, but for now, we are concentrating on this 50th Anniversary collection to present as much previously unreleased music as we can. So…if you have favorite scores and/or cues… be as specific as you want from the episodes—give me Netflix timecode from the episodes and I will make sure to try to include the correct piece!”

The place to get your requests in in the Film Score Monthly Message Board. It is free to register, and when submitting requests wait about 30 seconds for it to post because the message board does lag slightly.
I put in a few requests myself including the music of Q’s Mariachi Band from Star Trek: The Next Generation Episode “Deju Q”.
Are you a Star Trek fan, and is there any Star Trek music that you would like to see on La La Land Records upcoming 50th Anniversary Album?
