On August 3, 2018, Materia Collective will be releasing Jason Grave’s score to Moss. Jason Graves has scored several games including the Dead Space series, Tomb Raider, Until Dawn, and Far Cry Primal.

The VR game was developed by Polyarc for the PlayStation 4 and PC. The game’s description reveals that it begins in a library, where you play as the reader. You find an old book and once you flip through pages you get transported to a fantasy land inside the book. There you meet a young mouse, Quill and the adventure begins. You can view the game’s trailer below.

The game’s trailer features the song “Home to Me” with vocals performed by Malukah, who has worked with Jason Graves previously on Far Cry: Primal, and with Austin Wintory on The Banner Saga. The soundtrack also features Kristin Naigus on Flute, Oboe, English horn and Jeff Ball on Violin. You can sample three of the upcoming album tracks featured on Polyarc’s Soundcloud page below.

God of War Playstation Soundtrack Available for Pre-Order

On April 20th, the newest iteration of the God of War franchise will be releasing exclusively for the Playstation 4 to high anticipation of fans. The new title will also be scored by The Walking Dead and Defiance composer Bear McCreary. Now we know that the game’s soundtrack will be releasing shortly after the game itself for fans to enjoy.

The God of War (Playstation Soundtrack) will be published by Sony Classical as a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment. It will be available on Presto Classical on April 20th, the same day as the game’s release, and on April 27th on Amazon. McCreary showcased some of the game’s orchestral composition live at the Sony Press Conference at E3 2016.

The holy grail of videogame composition is creating for the player the feeling of a conductor watching the gameplay and cueing an orchestra to follow in real time. I joked with Cory [Barlog] later that we were spoiling him: he’ll never want to play a videogame without orchestral accompaniment again. – Bear McCreary

The soundtrack to God of War is currently available now for pre-order and will be available later this month. We will keep track of it’s release and will keep updated with more details as they become available.

Update 4/10/18: Our friends at VGMO have learned that Sony pushed their release back a week from the original date, so it looks like April 27th is the current release date for all outlets. Presto Classical has yet to update their listing with this new information but Amazon is still accurate.

Lost Sphear’s Western Pre-order Bonus includes two special tracks by Composer Tomoki Miyoshi!

Sqaure Enix and Tokyo RPG Factory recently shared more details on Lost Sphear, the next game from the studio that produced the wonderful I Am Setsuna. Lost Sphear‘s plot is about a young man who witnesses a strange reality altering phenomena who then has to use the power of memory to restore the world. The game will also feature a Chrono Trigger style battle system. You can watch the first trailer for the game below which ends with the message that the “Limited Run Physical Edition with two special tracks by composer Tomoki Miyoshi.

I reached out to Tomoki Miyoshi on twitter earlier this month about whether or not he was returning to score Lost Sphear. On June 1, 2017 he reported back to say that, “Yes, I am very thankful and happy to be working again with Tokyo RPG Factory on their next installment! I felt so moved by the incredible support of people, that I received for my involvement in ‘I Am Setsuna’, and so I made sure to pour even more energy and gratitude into every part of this next soundtrack.” During E3 the game was also previewed here and more details on the game’s soundtrack were revealed. Lost Sphear’s soundtrack will move beyond I Am Setsuna‘s focus on piano to be a more robust orchestral soundtrack. You can listen to these comments in the video below at around 3:20 into the video.

Lost Sphear is expected to be released on Playstation 4 and Steam in early 2018. You can pre-order the game directly from the game’s official website. The site also features some lovely music. Are you excited for Lost Sphear?

The Last Guardian Collector’s Edition to Include Soundtrack

Did you happen to catch the trailer to the upcoming Playstation-exclusive adventure game The Last Guardian last night at Sony’s E3 conference? The game has been highly anticipated since its reveal at last year’s E3 and has been building hype ever since. The game and its accompanied music score, composed and conducted by Takeshi Furukawa and the London Symphony Orchestra, is high on atmosphere akin to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

The game will be released on October 25th worldwide, but North American gamers can get a little something extra. According to VGMdb, the North American collector’s edition of the game will include a 10-track digital OST of the game. Whether this is a complete soundtrack to the game or just a sampler remains to be seen, but you can pre-order the collector’s edition now on Amazon.

Celebrate PlayStation’s 20th U.S. Anniversary with a Chiptune Album

The original PlayStation may have celebrated its 20th anniversary last December in Japan, but for me — an American teenager at the time — it’s September 9th, 1995 that I remember most fondly. Even before the console was out it was turning me on to new music. The “Hear it Now, Play it Later” demo disc I got for pre-ordering the console introduced me to the likes of Korn, Mother May I and Dag and even included uncredited tracks from Tommy Tallarico. After the launch it was a constant stream of new favorites with soundtracks in every style represented.

But just like Sony’s push to bypass 2D games and focus on the PlayStation’s polygonal power, there wasn’t a lot of classic 16-bit style music to be heard. Some developers did choose to render their music with the PlayStation sound hardware but the cool factor of “CD Quality Sound” was hard to ignore. It wasn’t exclusive to PlayStation — CD-based consoles had been around for nearly a decade in 1995 — but almost unanimously the sound was more like “real music” than the proverbial “bleeps and bloops” of the games that came before them. That was a powerful moment for gaming’s mainstream acceptance with graphics and music that leapt farther towards reality.

With that in mind it’s a little ironic to hear flagship PlayStation themes done in a chiptune style but it makes for an equally striking testament to how far things have come. That’s what Shiryu has done to commemorate the PlayStation’s 20th anniversary with the album PSXX. It’s a great listen that’s sure to touch at least one PlayStation classic you’ll recognize. I also found myself impressed with renditions of the atmospheric music from Tenchu, Resident Evil and Tomb Raider.

It’s an unexpectedly fitting way to remember the PlayStation on this anniversary of its North American debut and a great remix collection for any other day. PSXX is available now for €4 on Shiryu’s Bandcamp page. E3 2015: Most Anticipated Video Game Soundtracks

There are not that many video game soundtracks that I have been anticipating but today I got a serious soundtrack vibe. As E3 is approaching there have been numerous hopes and speculation about the Japan Studio and Team Ico’s The Last Guardian. Every year for the past few years at the beginning of June I dutifully revisit the two breathtaking trailers for the game. There’s the E3 2009 trailer which runs about 4 minutes, and there’s the Tokyo Game Show 2010 trailer that runs about 2 minutes. In the first trailer there are no mentions of who will be handling the music for the game but, it does mention that the Sound Design is being handled by Tsubasa Ito.

So being the curious type I try to look for hints, and clues about who will be doing the music for the game. As Kow Otani composed the now classic score for Shadow of the Colossus in 2005 my sights are on him. Secrecy in the Japanese game industry is legendary, and it may be nothing but it looks like Tsubasa Ito recently started following Kow Otani on Twitter. I may be grasping at feathers here, but one can dream right?

In this edition of Game Soundtracks for Your Soul, I am sharing some thoughts on electronic music used in game soundtracks that opened my eyes to the world of electronic, dance, techno and trance music. I also talk about another soundtrack that introduced me to one of my favorite manga and anime series. These soundtracks are Wipeout XL which I played on Sony Playstation, and Sword of the Berserk: Guts’ Rage on the Sega Dreamcast.
