That’s right, not only will there be a live concert featuring the music from Final Fantasy Tactics on November 22, 2009 in Japan, but arrangements of 61 songs will be performed in medley form, just ten songs short of the entire soundtrack. It seems that small productions like this are popping up all over Japan after that awesome Final Fantasy VI concert we reported on earlier this year.
Apparently this group of performers put the word out over a year ago, calling for players, conductors, and production staff to volunteer their time with the intent of tailoring their arrangements to whatever ensemble they could get together. But there are saxophones confirmed, which will be an odd accompaniment to the other orchestral elements. Regardless of the instruments they’re able to acquire, and despite the terrible artwork on the above flyer, this should be an amazing show that I’m very sad that I won’t get to see.
What are your thoughts regarding these smaller orchestral productions that we’ve been seeing lately? Is a Final Fantasy Tactics concert the best idea ever?

Holy crap, that’s awesome. The soundtrack was already fantastic, so I’m eager to see how they’ll improve upon this one. Hopefully there’ll be a recording that pops up someplace as I’d love to give it a listen.

Worst flyer ever XDDD
yeah, the flyer is pretty terrible. love the cg-trombone and the way the woman’s eyes engage neither the Great Beyond or the viewer.
but this is, as the original post asked, probably the best idea ever. i also hope that there was a recording. the fft soundtrack — sakimoto’s music, in general — is interesting in part because it’s based on a very idiosyncratic synthetic sound; hearing what real instruments’d do to the material would be awesome.
