Materia Collective and arranger Sean Schafianski are bringing the RPG nostalgia with the release of Breath of Fire III (Remastered Tracks), which gives tribute to the Playstation-era game composed by Yoshino Aoki and Akari Kaida.
Breath of Fire III (Remastered Tracks) includes several battle themes, from the playful “Fight!” to the epic finale titled “Self-Determination,” alongside the serene “Cedar Woods,” the jazzy overworld “To a Distant Place,” which features composer Wilbert Roget II on woodwinds, and the track “Pure Again.”
As with many of my previous remastered albums, I strive to keep the essence of the original tracks while adding a bit of flair. For this album, I went a little bit further with creative liberties, but not too far. A flute solo here, change of texture there, and so on. It was an honor and a privilege to work with fellow Materia Collective musicians, and a couple artists I had never worked with before! This album holds a very special place in my heart, as it is one of the first PlayStation RPGs that I played as a child, and the jazzy, upbeat soundtrack stuck with me ever since. I hope that listeners will feel the same energy, joy, and nostalgia that I did while revisiting this amazing soundtrack. – Sean Schafianski, album producer & arranger
The album is currently available on Bandcamp, iTunes and streaming on Spotify. You can learn more about the album including track credits on the Materia Collective website.
Materia Collective has released a new arrangement album dedicated to NieR: Automata titled Glory to Mankind. Created by artists Rozen and Reven to craft a pop orchestral arrangement slant on the album, Glory to Mankind feature 13 tracks including live vocal and instrumental pieces.
Rozen is a G.A.N.G. Award-winning arranger and composer who creates music for media, while Reven is a singer, songwriter, and composer known for her pure and versatile voice. She sings on many of Rozen’s releases and was a featured vocalist on Theophany’s Time’s End II.
It is our wish that people listen to this album and, if they are long-time fans of the series, experience a new, more intense take on the melodies that made the game’s story so iconic. For newer fans, we hope to introduce them to the world of NieR: Automata the same way we were: through the incredible music. – Rozen
Glory to Mankind is currently available in physical format on Bandcamp, and in digital format on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify.
Musician and composer Chris Baines, who might be known to some as the bassist for VGM bands Rare Candy and Entertainment System, has released a new solo album featuring music from Chrono Trigger, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Heavy Barrel!
TofuMakoToro is a six-track album that features orchestral rock and metal arrangements from several popular games. Baines released the album to Bandcamp, while also supplementing some track with music videos.
So I’ve arranged this song three times over the years. Once for Entertainment System, once for Rare Candy, and now for my solo album. The funny thing is this is the first time I’ve actually gotten around to finally performing it. This is also the first playthrough video I’ve put together so be gentle as I’m still trying to get better at this video editing stuff. – Chris Baines, referencing video TofuMakoToro track Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
You can purchase TofuMakoToro on Bandcamp for $5.99 for either digital or CD format. You can also check out more of Baines’s work on his website, http://www.chrisbainesmusic.com/.
Video game music publisher Materia Collective have gone above and beyond with the release of their massive, 100-track Final Fantasy X album, SPIRA.
Spread across two 50-track volumes titled Besaid Mix and Zanarkand Mix, SPIRA covers a huge variety of styles such as orchestral, electronic, and rock along with Bollywood, disco, gypsy punk, folk and irreverent chocobo choir from a large cast of musical talent includes Horizon Zero Dawn vocalist Julie Elven, composer Dale North, Pokémon Reorchestrated arranger Braxton Burks, the Triforce Quartet, and many others.
The Final Fantasy X soundtrack already contains a lot of variations on a few common themes. We wanted to create a listening experience where it didn’t feel like you’re listening to ‘Hymn of the Fayths’ 20 times in a row, so all of our artists aimed to do something new on their track. For example, some artists arranged in an unfamiliar style, while others incorporated unique instrumentation. As a result, both SPIRA albums re-frame the classic themes from Final Fantasy X with a fresh perspective. – Joe Chen & Emily McMillan, Project Organizers
SPIRA: Music from Final Fantasy X is fully licensed and available today on Bandcamp for $12 apiece for both the Besaid Mix and Zanarkand Mix.

We currently reside in a community filled with fantastic game music bands from all over the world that span almost all genres. When you have dozens (if not at this point, hundreds) of bands and musicians that dedicate themselves to covering and arranging game music from the Atari all the way through to the current generation of gaming, it can sometimes be a bit hard to catch everything. Extra Lives is a band out of Los Angeles that is a simple, straight cover band that doesn’t do anything fancy; they just do really fantastic covers of music from all sorts of games.
The four-man band has been releasing their covers regularly to Youtube for the past year, touching upon everything from Chrono Trigger to Final Fantasy 4 to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and more. One might be keen to wonder why, with all the bands out there doing remixing and arranging of game music into grand metal, rock or orchestral variations, should a band that just does straight covers be something to pay much mind to? There is a simple charm to bands that not only play covers, but play them well. Bands like The Minibosses became the legends they are breaking into the field of game music bands with straight covers, and sometimes it’s nice to go back to those roots.
It’s also nice to find new bands that straight their legs a bit and cover songs that might otherwise go completely uncovered, such as The Adventures of Bayou Billy.
The band recently performed with Kirby’s Dream Band during their first live performance, and hopefully will be doing more in the future. You can check out all of their video on their Youtube channel and check back for new videos regularly.
What are you opinions of straight cover bands as opposed to bands that do more arranged game music? Let us know in the comments.
Here’s a fun little treat to close out your holiday week. Grant “Stemage” Henry of Metroid Metal and Viking Guitar Live renown has decided to take some of the most iconic tunes from the NES library and literally spins them in reverse with RETROGRESSION VOL.1. The resulting reversed tracks prove that the musical library of many NES games, such as Super Mario Bros. and Punch Out! are just as amazing backwards as they are forwards.
Henry proves the legitimacy of his retro reversals by also releasing the tracks themselves reversed into their original compositions in order to hear exactly how on-the-mark he hits with the backwards transcriptions.
You can grab RETROGRESSION VOL.1 (meaning we could see more volumes in the future) at the name-your-price tier on the Stemage Bandcamp site.
