3rd Annual OSVOSTOTY Awards: 2011 Nominees Announced

It’s one of the most wonderful times of year here at OSV. With 2011 finally done and wrapped up, we’ve been reflecting on all the amazing music that last year saw, and we’ve been excited to get our list of nominees prepared. It was a tough task as usual (try to get any two people to agree on the best of anything, much less half a dozen people!), but we’re happy with what we’ve come up with. We’ve changed some of the categories from our 2010 awards to reflect the site’s focus on game music throughout 2011, but we hope that you’ll still enjoy some surprises in the list as well.

Don’t know if anyone noticed, but OSV officially turned three sometime in June of this year. We were a little busy wrapping up E3 coverage and getting ready for Comic Con at the time, and I still don’t really have the time to put together a massive post like I did last year. I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank readers of the site for giving all of us the inspiration to continue doing what we do here. Without your feedback and encouraging words, we likely would have given up long ago!

I won’t say that possible changes aren’t in store for the future, but if you enjoy what we do, let us know, and feel free to make suggestions regarding what you’d like to see us cover. And if you’re passionate about nerdy music and are looking for a creative outlet, come on board. We’ll need all the help we can get to make it another three years!

2nd Annual OSVOSTOTY 2010 Awards: Winners and Runners-Up Announced

The results are in. This is one of the toughest processes any of us here at OSV have had to go through, but we’ve finally come to a list and ranking that we can all at least kind of agree upon. No, I’m kidding. Even though we each fought for our individual favorites, we all stand behind the results, and we hope we can turn you on to some new music that you may have missed this year in the process.

2nd Annual OSVOSTOTY Awards: 2010 Nominees Announced

It’s that time of year again! With the start of a new year, we have all of 2010 to reflect upon, and we’re doing things a little differently this year. If you recall, last year OSV’s editors rattled off their individual top 5 picks for soundtrack of the year, with separate articles for doujin/arrange and chip music releases. This year, however, we’re streamlining things by putting all of our heads together here at OSV to come up with a comprehensive list of nominees and winners that we can all agree upon.

After the jump you’ll find our official OSVOSTOTY (Original Sound Version Original Soundtrack of the Year) Award nominees for 2010. These are soundtracks for games that were released in 2010, and are not listed any in particular order. Piano Pieces SF2 Contest Winner Determined! TWICE!

Hey all! Just wanted to let you know who won the Piano Pieces SF2 Version Difference contest/giveaway. If you’re reading this, hoping it’s you; well, sorry, it’s not you.

On Thursday (August 19th) we selected “Mike D” using the awesome powers of MS Excel’s /random function. His “winning comment” was as follows:

OMG THIS ALBUM IS AWESOME

Turns out he knew what he was talking about. When OSV contacted Mike to see which version he wanted, he admitted that he probably shouldn’t have commented, as he didn’t want to inadvertently enter the contest. You see, Mike already owned one version of the album (the original) and, like me, saw no point in owning both prints. So Mike gracefully declined, and we picked another winner.

Said new winner was Kaleb Grace, who left this comment:

SaGa Frontier II was the first OST I ever purchased. Loads of nostalgia for me. However, I never got around to buying this album. It would be nice to have.

So, congratulations to Kaleb, who decided to take the original DigiCube print (pictured above). Thanks also for the recommendations on the doujin albums! The battle medley including “Todfeind” off of Tone Quell is quite good!

I joined Original Sound Version soon after its inception in June of 2008. Jayson Napolitano invited me and I haven’t looked back. On a personal note, it’s been quite a journey. But in many ways, we’ve only just begun. Today, with this post, we reach 1000 posts on our humble nerd-music blog. We’re proud of what we’ve done so far, and we plan on continuing our unique brand of coverage of game/anime music, chiptunes, and other awesome stuff.

クリス・リンやジャスティン・フェイファーら翻訳家の助力もあり、今までOSVでは数多くの著名な日本人ゲーム音楽家のインタビューを掲載してきました。これまでは英文のみでしたが、OSVではこれから英文と日本文の両方を掲載いたします。OSV側で翻訳された記事に限られますが、これによって英語圏の読者と増えつつある日本からの読者のギャップを埋める事が出来ると思います。

With the help of Chris Ling and Justin Pfeiffer, we have been publishing interviews of many renowned Japanese video game composers. Until now they were only available in English, but OSV will be publishing them both in English and Japanese from now on. It is limited to the articles that required translation, but it should help bridge the gap between our mainly English-speaking readers and a growing number of readers we have coming in from Japan.
