Fans of coffee table books and old computers may remember the Kickstarter campaign for Commodore 64: a Visual Compendium that was launched (and fully funded) on January 18th. Backers of the 260-page tome had the chance to snag a physical CD featuring remixes of famed chiptune composer and C64 legend, Martin Galway. The initial playlist featured remixes by another chiptune veteran, Allister Brimble. Thanks to the exuberant funding of backers the stretch goals expanded to include more remixes from fabled folks like Jeroen Tel, Mike Clarke and Chris Huelsbeck.
I didn’t tell you all of this to get your hopes up for a sweet backer reward you can’t even listen to though! Now that the book and physical CD have been shipped to the backers Brimble has released the album — The Galway Works — for everyone else’s digital consumption. Available for about $10, you can grab the 13-track album from Bandcamp, iTunes, Google Play or stream it on Spotify now.
Included are remixes of Galway’s most iconic creations from the Comic Bakery theme to his interpretation of Rambo II. Wizball, Arkanoid, Green Beret, Terra Cresta and more are also featured on the album. Brimble has also released similar remix albums for the ZX Spectrum and the Amiga which Brenna reviewed not too long ago.

Limited Run Games has announced their next set of physical releases on PlayStation 4 and it’s all about Shantae. The cult classic platforming adventure series began on the Game Boy Color in 2002 and has seen two new entries in recent years with a fourth installment coming in December.
As part of the lead up to the new game, Half-Genie Hero, developer WayForward and Limited Run are releasing 5,800 physical copies of both Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($24.99) and Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse ($29.99) on October 28th at 10am EST.
One of the hallmarks of the series has always been its music, created by Jake “virt” Kaufman, which Limited Run is also commemorating with three new CD releases. Also up for sale on October 28th will be a scant 750 copies of the soundtracks to all three current titles: Shantae, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge and Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse. The albums each cost $14.99 and will be made available in two batches at 9:45am and again at 6:00pm EST.
If this news has rekindled your Shantae passion or if you’re new to it’s music you can read much, much more about it in our previous coverage. The Risky’s Revenge and Pirate’s Curse soundtracks are also available on virt’s Bandcamp page and once, long ago, he posted the original Game Boy Color music to his blog.

Last month, Original Sound Version partnered up with the Dwelling of Duels game music competition and Impact Soundworks at MAGFest Labs to debut “Opposing Bloodlines“; a video game music competition specifically for established game music cover bands, be they instrumental, chiptune, acapella or otherwise. The competition was a success with one of the prizes for the winner being a feature on OSV!
The grand winner of the competition was a one-man band out of southern Maryland known as WASD. Who and what is WASD?
OCTOBER 6, 2016 – Black Screen Records will release Jonah Senzel’s amazing soundtrack of the critically acclaimed indie game Pony Island on vinyl this November. The bubbling 8bit soundtrack will come on limited edition 180 gram clear and audiophile 180g black vinyl. The artwork was exclusively designed by the game’s creator Daniel Mullins. The soundtrack comes with a free Steam code, which can be used to download full game as well as the mp3 version of the soundtrack on Steam.
“Pony island is a game with two distinct faces: the cheerful outer facade, and the evil lurking under the surface. Most of the soundtrack is based around this idea of the “devil within” that’s present throughout the game. The most fun part of writing the soundtrack was composing really over the top cheerful cutesy Tracks for the cheery sections and then turning around and getting as gritty and evil sounding as possible for the devil sections. For the happy sections I channeled my inner children’s TV composer using fun, light and bouncy melodies played on old school 8bit synths as well as real instruments like the ukulele. – Jonah Senzel; Developer & Composer
A trippy and unique experience that will make the player desperate and stunned at the same time. Pony Island is probably most enjoyable when played without knowing what to expect. Without giving too much away, it can be said that the game works mostly on the meta-level and it will take some time to figure out where the story is heading. A marvelous game for long and sleepless nights that will leave you pondering and amazed, while enjoying it’s varied music that perfectly fits the constant ups and downs of cheerful and vicious moments. I personally love it when games of long-past systems make news decades after their time. In this case, the soundtrack to the Game Boy Color RPG, Infinity, has now received a proper soundtrack release thanks to the efforts of the Materia Collective and composer Eric Hache with sound engineer Mathew Valente.
The game itself was only recently released after years of being in development hell, as developer Affinix continued to struggle to release the game despite the GBC being long past its prime and the company going defunct. Last month, the ROM for the game was released to the public, and now sees its soundtrack available for the first time through Bandcamp, iTunes and soon to be released on Spotify.
“We would like to thank our team at Affinix Software foremost for their efforts in developing this special game. We would also like to thank our families, friends, and Materia Collective for making this release possible! We are excited to bring this soundtrack to RPG fans everywhere and hope you all enjoy it!” – Eric Hache & Mathew Valente
Infinity is currently open source and 90% done, with Affinix stating it has plans to finish the game but encourages fans to build upon the game themselves. You can learn more about the soundtrack itself on the Materia Collective website.
The prequel to the retro roguelike shoot ’em up Starr Mazer, titled Starr Mazer DSP, has made it to Steam Early Access and is available now to tantalize your fingertips and your earholes.
“Main Theme” (Preview) – Starr Mazer DSP
“For Starr Mazer DSP’s soundtrack, we’re doing a Venn diagram of music styles: combining the moody-melodic Starr Mazer sound with the ’80s style ‘Outrun‘ sub-genre of synth-wave. Inspirations include demoscene musicians like Lizardking, ’80s European disco records, arcade soundtracks like U.N. Squadron, and a visit to Miami. The main Stage 1 theme was written while on that trip.” – Alex Mauer, Starr Mazer DSP composer
